CONGRESSMAN’S NEW APPOINTMENT GIVES HIM GLOBAL VIEW
Kingston named to State, Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee
Already a senior member of the House Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations, Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) is picking up a new post that will expand his influence in American operations abroad.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-KY) has announced that Kingston will take a seat on the panel’s State, Foreign Operations, and Related Agencies Subcommittee. The new post will give Kingston increase oversight of the nation’s diplomatic operations, foreign aid programs, and agencies that promote American businesses and products abroad.
“While this subcommittee’s jurisdiction accounts for a small portion of the total federal budget, it contains important programs to promoting America’s interests and security abroad,” said Kingston. “The challenge is proving the value of these operations to the American people in the context of a tough budget environment. We need to ensure foreign aid serves as a hand up to the most impoverished and not a hand out to prop up broken systems. I hope to use this position to maximize the value of our investments abroad and to end those programs that are not working.”
The subcommittee’s jurisdiction includes the nation’s diplomatic efforts overseen by the U.S. Department of State as well as non-food foreign aid such as programs administered by the Agency for International Development (USAID). Food aid is overseen by the Agriculture Subcommittee which Kingston chaired in the previous congressional session.
It also provides significant security funding through the Department of Defense’s Foreign Military Financing Program and International Military Assistance and Training. The subcommittee funds international narcotics control, anti-terrorism and non-proliferation programs, peacekeeping efforts, and other international security operations.
Additionally, the panel provides funding for export and investment programs as well to promote American exports and private investment in markets abroad.
Earlier it was announced that Kingston will serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations and continue his position as a senior member of the Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations.
