ICYMI: Jack discusses gun control on MSNBC Live
Posted by Press Staff on December 18, 2012
In case you missed it, Jack appeared on MSNBC Live with Thomas Roberts this morning to discuss the gun control debate in light of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

While Jack supports fully reviewing our laws to see what can be done to prevent future tragedies such as these, focusing solely on gun laws misses the point.  Adam Lanza violated several laws in the commission of this heinous crime.  What does adding another one do to ensure this does not happen again?  We have to be able to answer that question before we move forward and we have to be sure we are reviewing this from a comprehensive standpoint that takes into consideration everything that played a factor in this crime.

Rep. Kingman seems to have mental issues himself - he appears to be more interested in discussing the technical definition of "assualt weapon" than showing any real interest or compassion for all the young children killed by a weapon that should not be in the hands of anyone except military or law enforcement personnel.

One big issue is our media's role in this. It's willingness to make the assassin famous is a disgrace and only encourages the next would-be killer to go out in the same "blaze of glory". If the primary role of government is to protect ITS citizens, why do we spend so much money on putting military bases around the world to protect the citizens of OTHER countries? Perhaps we need to re-examine how much money we spend protecting others vs how much money we spend protecting our own.

Ben does not get it, 1/3 of mass murders in the US do not involve guns the problem is we have no system to identify those that are dangerous in our society and to deal with them compassionately and successfully. Unfortunately we have dismantled the mental health care system in this county to a large extent. If Ben had any compassion he would be more concerned for finding and caring for these individuals than being "politically correct" which is where I think he really is.

You make sense, Jack. More gun laws will not solve problems when criminals do not follow laws.

Jack, guns are not even the issue. The issue is that the Newtown killer had access to those children. They had no protection in place to prevent that heinous attack. He could have just as easily walked in that school with grenades or homemade pipe bombs. He could have possibly killed even more children than with a gun. He just happened to use a gun as his choice of killing device. Address the security issues that are lacking in our schools. You will probably get more support for that than trying to demolish our 2nd Ammendment. It seems that Obama is wanting to do just that, with or without Congressional approval.
