103 Representatives Call for “Cut, Cap, and Balance” Response to Debt
Posted by Chris Crawford on June 06, 2011

103 House Republicans, including Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA), today called for a three-pronged approach of spending reductions to resolve the debt limit impasse.

The “Cut, Cap and Balance” proposal, outlined in a letter to Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, calls for:

  1. Immediate spending cuts to slash the deficit in half next year.  According to March projections from the Congressional Budget Office, this would require spending cuts of approximately $380 billion in the 2012 fiscal year.
  2. Statutory, enforceable caps that align spending with average revenues by ratcheting total federal spending down to 18% of GDP.
  3. House and Senate passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution that includes a spending cap at 18% of GDP and a high hurdle for tax increases.  47 Senators have already endorsed a Balanced Budget Amendment along these lines.

The full text of the letter is available here, and the 103 House Republicans who signed the letter are listed below.

“Cut, Cap, and Balance” has also garnered the support of the American Conservative Union, the American Family Business Institute, Americans for Limited Government, Americans for Tax Reform, Citizens United, the Club for Growth, the College Republicans, and the Conservative Action Project.  Other supporters include the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, the Family Research Council, FreedomWorks, Heritage Action, Let Freedom Ring, the Life & Liberty PAC, the National Taxpayers Union, and RedState.com.

lThe action you suggest is long overdue. I would go a step further and recommend that Presidential terms be limited to one 6 year term and that Congressional and and Senate terms be limited to only 2 terms.. This would go a long way to reducing the favoritism and corruption in government, and it would make the goverment more efficient since our Representative wouldn't have to spent so much time solisiting favors in concern for their re-election, especially the President.

I agree that you need to cut the budget. One way would be to stop foreign aid. It doesn't make sense to borrow money and give it to Countries who don't like us. Another way is to reduce the pensions of Congressmen who have retired.

Congressman, Wonderful. Great. NOW put some teeth into this and CHANGE the direction our country is going. At this rate we will be owned by everyone BUT U.S. citizens.

Thanks for this update. Keep pushing the democrats to make these changes. I want to thank you for all of your continued hard work. Things in our country cannot continue to go the way it is as of today. I am on Medicare and Social Security. What is being dicussed, will not affect me, but it will my children and grandchildren. They should be able to put aside money for their retirement. Keep trying to change the bill that demands that we have medical coverage by the govenment. We, most of us, that are retired, did not count on Social Security to be the only retirement fund that we would have. For those in the political arena, that continue to embrass all of us, lets remove them from office. No more of the apologies, after the fact. They knew what they were doing at the time. I noticed that no Democrats signed the letter. I firmly believe that the Rupublican Party must go on the attack concerning the debt and hold the Democrats feet to the fire. Keep the national debt and unemployment at the forefront every time you go on a newsshow, are interviewed by the press, and on the floor of the House and Senate. You must educate the American people on how to hold down the debt and start to pay it off and balance the budget. We have to live within our means and so should the Federal government. Don't let the Democrats use Medicare as a ruse to ignore the debt problem. The national debt, unemployment, and illegal aliens are the main issues most Americans are concerned about. Hammer the Democrats on these issues every chance you get.

I suppose any step in this direction is of some benefit, however, the only long term methos is to begin cutting unnecessary bureaus. Unless the cancer is completely removed it will simply lie in wait to begin growing again. Dr. Bailey

I LIKE GEORGE PETRIDES IDEA OF ONE 6 YEAR TERM FOR PRESIDENT AND ONE 2 TERMS FOR BOTH THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE. HE IS CORRECT IN HIS THINKING THAT THIS WOULD REDUCE THE CORRUPTION IN OUR GOVERNMENT. I WOULD GO ONE STEP FURTHER AND SAY THAT THE RETIREMENT CONGRESS THINKS THEY ARE ENTITLED TO BE DONE AWAY WITH COMPLETELY. LET THE CONGRESSMEN GO BACK INTO THE PUBLIC ARENA AND MAKE A LIVING AND RETIREMENT JUST AS "WE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO DO".
