Washington, Oct 28 - Naval Submarine Kings Bay was honored this week with the Navy’s highest honor for water and energy efficiency.  In a ceremony in Washington, the installation received the Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Award for Small Shore Installation.

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA), who was on hand for the ceremony, congratulated the base and cited it as an example for all to follow.

“We have a responsibility to be good stewards of our environment and limited resources,” Congressman Kingston said.  “This award shows that Kings Bay remains at the forefront of this vital goal for all to follow.  In addition, this efficiency makes the base more attractive for future missions and reaffirms what we already knew – no one can match the high quality work being done at Kings Bay.”

To earn the award, Kings Bay reduced energy consumption by 45 percent compared to 2003 and water consumption by 11 percent in comparison to 2007.  The base made a significant investment water and energy infrastructure which will yield a savings of $550,000 per year in utility costs.  Among the projects covered are improvements and efficiencies for the wastewater treatment infrastructure, water distribution lines, as well as solar-powered pumps stop signs.  

In addition to the Secretary of the Navy Awards, the Trident Training Facility and Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic, both at Kings Bay, were recognized for significant improvements.

The Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Awards recognize outstanding commitment to energy and water management by Navy and Marine Corps installations, ships and squadrons across the country and around the globe.  The awards are presented to those commands that have made notable progress toward goals to reduce energy and water consumption, increase use of renewable energy sources and construct sustainable facilities.
