President Bush's Five Point Comprehensive Immigration Plan
Washington, May 15 -
Folks - I know that immigration is high on your list of concerns, if not the number one issue you're worried about. This afternoon some of my colleagues and I spoke with the White House about the President's speech tonight. In short, when it comes to immigration, President Bush has decided to say "Deal me in, I'm in the game." How so? He's got a five point plan that he will lay out for Americans: 1. Secure our borders - send 6,000 National Guardsmen to the border by 2008. They will not be involved in law enforcement, but will provide support to Border Patrol. He will also talk about funding for a virtual border and a real fence. 2. Temporary guest worker program - similar to the Hagel-Martinez compromise in the Senate. 3. Interior enforcement - this involves a tamper proof bio-metric id card. 4. Deportation - the President will look to end the catch and release program. 5. Assimilation - immigrants must become part of society - learning about our culture, history and understanding English.
There are a lot of blanks to fill in, but this is a good step and I'm glad the President is getting in the game.
